Bageshwar
is an important pilgrimage place in the Kumaon Himalayas and is also the
base for the most popular trekking routes. The Pindari Glacier is 3kms long
and flows from the impressive peaks of Nanda Kot (6861m) and Nanda Khat
(6611m) on the southern rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. From Bageshwar it
is a 2hrs drive to Song which is a small village and from here it is a 3hrs
walk to Loharkhet. The initial stage up and over the Dhakri Pass (2835m) is
long and tiring through the evergreen forest and the views of Trishul,
Devtoli and Nanda Khat from the top are impressive. The meadow of Dhakri
lies just below the Pass.
From Dhakri the trail descends steeply in places through the fields of
potato and barley. The views up the Sunderdhunga valley are impressive and
the trail continues to the village of Khati among the meadows. From here the
trail winds high above the Pindari River and then descends down to the
bridge over the Pindari River. After crossing the bridge you reach Dwali
which is above the confluence of Pindari river and river from the Kafni
Glacier. From here the trail ascends through mixed forest and meadows. The
peak of Nanda Khat appears at the head of the valley. Reach Purkia from
where the valley widens and the trail ascends gradually to the snowfields of
the Pindari Glacier. About 3kms below the Glacier Zero Point is the
settlement place of the shepherds. From here descend to Dwali and then to
Dhakuri and finally to Bageshwar where the trek ends.
